I decided to have Debian Sarge (3.1) – www.debian.org on the new disk
that I installed on my home server. The new disk is a 250GB SATA Maxtor
and my SATA controller is SiS 180.
Installing from ISO-burned DVD’s I got error:
Disk error 80, AX= 4280 drive 9F
First I thought it was due to Sata, but it was actually due to the non-very-good 1st DVD.
I had created boot floppies (boot, root, cd drivers) and tried to continue the installation with DVDs but that time,
the DVD could not be read.
I re-burned the DVD and booted from floppies. 🙂
I got a weird shutdown during ext3 formatting (250 GB)
It was simply giving black screen, no fan etc. running. But:
– I cannot startup the box
– And the DVD-ROM device becomes active from time to time.
I could reboot after shutting down everything including the UPS.
This time I started with
expert26 noapic nolapic
And it went fine with the ext3 formatting. Following steps, I started installing the base linux, and went to bed 🙂
In the morning I had the weird shutdown again. I’ll see later, but I think I’ll try with the netinstall soon.. 🙂
Whee .. It worked .. The shutdown and a ghost using the DVD problem has
been sorted out .. Who would know it was “again” a “check the cable”
problem where the UPS connection was loose and the “Use CD when off”
was configured in BIOS 🙂
I could do the installation with floppies:
boot
root
cd drivers
and the DVD-ROMs.. No SATA problem.. Nothing .. Works like a dream
Hmm.. I got this weird reboot again ..
And sorted that out probably 🙂
I
had my CPU fan disconnected from power, and the box was heating up. And
my intelligent motherboard decides to shutdown. Cute thing ..
